Fractional CTO

A CTO's judgment.
Without the CTO's salary.

Fractional CTO services for founders building AI-native products. Architecture, hiring, vendor choices, code review, and roadmap ownership, on retainer. Built for the stage where a full-time CTO is too early but flying blind is too risky.

What We Own

The technical seat, fully, for a slice of the hours.

Architecture & stack decisions

Pick the boring choices on purpose. Avoid the bills that come due in 18 months.

Hiring and team management

Source, interview, level, onboard, and manage engineers. Most founders save the retainer in one bad-hire avoided.

AI tooling and guardrails

Evaluate Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and the next wave. Set up the rules that keep AI-generated code from quietly breaking production.

Code review and quality bar

PR review on the changes that matter. Catch security issues, performance traps, and shortcuts before they ship.

Investor and board comms

Translate the engineering story for non-technical investors. Answer the diligence questions you don't want to wing.

Incident response and on-call structure

Set up monitoring, paging, and runbooks before the 2am outage, not after.

Who This Is For

Three founder profiles we work with most.

Solo technical founder

You ship the code. You also do everything else. You need a counterweight who can review the calls you're too in-the-weeds to second-guess.

Non-technical founder with a vibe-coded MVP

You got the demo working. You need someone you trust in the technical seat before you raise, hire, or onboard real customers. Often pairs with our vibe coding rescue work.

Small team, no CTO yet

Two to five engineers. Velocity is fine but architecture is drifting. You need senior judgment before you commit to choices you can't unwind.

FAQ

Common questions.

What does a fractional CTO actually do?

Senior engineering judgment, on retainer. We set technical direction, vet hires, review architecture decisions, unblock the team, talk to investors about the stack, run code reviews, and own the parts of the roadmap a part-time founder can't get to. The point is to give you a CTO's calls without a CTO's salary.

Who is this for?

Pre-seed to Series A founders who are technical enough to ship something but need a seasoned counterweight. Non-technical founders with a vibe-coded MVP who need someone trustworthy in the technical seat. Small teams between their first engineer and a full-time CTO hire.

How is this different from a contractor or agency?

Contractors execute against a spec you write. A fractional CTO writes the spec, picks the contractor, and owns the outcome. We're accountable to your business goals, not a sprint board.

How many hours per week?

Most engagements run 8-20 hours per week. We scope based on stage: pre-launch is heavier (architecture, hiring, vendor selection), post-launch is steadier (reviews, incident response, hiring, roadmap). We're transparent about time and what it bought you.

AI-native? What does that mean here?

We run our own engineering with AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) and we set up your team to do the same safely. That means evaluating AI codegen tools, writing internal guardrails, choosing what's safe to vibe-code vs. what isn't, and avoiding the security and reliability debt that comes from AI-generated code without review.

What does it cost?

Monthly retainers, scoped to hours. No long-term contract: month-to-month after the first 90 days. We'd rather you stay because we're earning it than because you're locked in.

Can you also hire and manage engineers for us?

Yes. Sourcing, interviewing, leveling, onboarding, and ongoing technical management of contractors or full-time hires. This is one of the most common asks from founders who've never managed engineers before.

Want to talk?

First call is free, no pitch. We'll tell you whether a fractional CTO is actually what you need, or something cheaper would work.
